I am in the early stages of my career as a scholar of International Relations. I have a long-standing affiliation with UQ. I completed my PhD and worked as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow within the School of Political Science and International Studies.
I am interested in the changing character of the legitimacy of war, specifically the jus ad bellum. I am at work on a monograph, based on my PhD thesis, about the history of the norms we use to argue about war. I investigate why dilemmas about its legitimacy have become so hard to resolve, and what role legal, moral and constitutional norms play in that process. My next research project is on the ideology of progress in Western political thought, and its relationship to the use of force over the long 20th Century.
