POLS7120 (MGPP): Research report courses allow a student to work independently with a supervisor from the School to complete a research thesis. This course is for full-time students seeking to complete the thesis in one semester. Access to this course is limited. Entry is initially restricted to students who have: 1) an exceptional record of achievement reflected in a high GPA; 2) completed #12 units of their Program comprising all 6 MGPP Core Courses; 3) completed a research report application form, which includes a detailed research report proposal. Completion of a research methods course is a recommended prerequisite. Further information, including the application form and the application due date, is available from the POLSIS website here. Students are required to submit the application form and their research proposal by the relevant due date by email to polsis@uq.edu.au.

POLS7121 (MGPP):Research report courses allow a student to work independently with a supervisor from the School to complete a research thesis. POLS7122 (MGPP)

Students commencing in Semester 2 enrol in POLS7122.

Students enrolling in POLS7122 in Semester 2 are required to enrol in this course in two consecutive semesters (both Semester 2 and Semester 1 the following year).

Independent Study (MGPP) POLS7108 - contact A/Prof Ryan Walter or A/Prof Andrew Phillips (sem 2) and Associate Professor Andrew Phillips (semester 2).

This is a restricted entry course and School consent must be obtained prior to enrolment. Studies in governance and public policy focusing on various areas of the discipline. The precise nature of the course will vary according to availability of staff. Students should contact the school by email to polsis@uq.edu.au for further information. Students will be directed to enrol in this course where appropriate by the Independent Study Coordinator. This course is not available as a general elective.

Independent Study (MIR,MPaCs) POLS7207 - contact A/Prof Ryan Walter (semester 1) and Associate Professor Andrew Phillips (semester 2)

This is a restricted entry course and requires prior approval from the School. The independent study option allows students of exceptional ability to engage in a minor research project. The course is particularly useful for postgraduate coursework students who wish to investigate a topic of interest not covered by other postgraduate courses. Prospective students must nominate two preferred supervisors. While you are welcome to discuss your intention to apply and proposed research with a member of staff, this is not a requirement. Supervisors will be allocated by the School based on availability, expertise and a fair distribution of supervisory load across the School. Enrolment in the course will be contingent on the School's capacity to identify appropriate supervision. Student eligibility will be examined in the following areas: Grade point average (GPA): successful applicants would be expected to have achieved a program GPA of 5.5 or better in their Masters program Progression through degree: successful applicants would be expected to be in the final semester of their studies (or have completed at least 8 units in the program) Viability of project: the project outline will be reviewed to determine its quality, viability and feasibility Availability of supervisor: the research project must be of direct interest to an academic staff member within the school, who in turn must have the workload capacity to supervise a student. Research Methods POLS7701 - Contact Dr Molly Murphy (semester 1) and Dr Michael Gavin (email polsis@uq.edu.au

This course introduces students to the process of designing a research project, focusing in particular on common approaches to data collection and analysis in social science research. Students will develop understanding of the relative merits of contrasting methodologies, and skills in identifying methodological rigour and ethical design.

  • Completed #12 units of their program. MPaCS students must have completed all five MPaCS Core Courses and one MPaCS Flexible Core Course. MIR students must have completed all four MIR Core Courses and two MIR Flexible Core Courses. Completion of a research methods course is a recommended prerequisite; and
  • Completed a research report application form, which includes a detailed research report proposal.

Research thesis courses allow a student to work independently with a supervisor from the School to complete a research thesis. This course is for MIR and MPaCS students who intend to write the thesis across two semesters.

Students commencing in Semester 1 should enrol in POLS7708 for two consecutive semesters. Students commencing in Semester 2 enrol in POLS7709 for two consecutive semesters. Access to this course is limited. Entry is initially restricted to students who have:

  • an exceptional record of achievement reflected in a high GPA;
  • completed a minimum of #8 units of their Program, which will include compulsory courses. Completion of a research methods course is a recommended prerequisite; and
  • completed a research report application form, which includes a detailed research report proposal.
