Visiting Academic and Research Program

 

The School of Political Science and International Studies welcomes applications from visiting academics and research students whose work broadly aligns with the mission of the School. The scheme is designed to foster scholarly and collegial networks and collaborations between the School and academics and research students from other institutions that lead to knowledge sharing and ongoing networks.

Visitors are invited for between four weeks and six months. Visits of longer than six months may be negotiated upon request.


Eligibility

Visiting academics must hold a PhD and have a minimum of one year’s postdoctoral experience.

Visiting research students must be enrolled in a recognised program of study for a minimum of one year and have their enrolment active for the duration of their visit.

The conferral of the title visiting academic or visiting research students occurs in accordance with The University of Queensland's Policies and Procedures: Visiting Academic Policy. Under this policy, visitors of less than four weeks are not eligible for Visiting Academic status but may be able to access some University resources under the University’s Volunteer Policy


General conditions

Visiting academics and research students do not receive a salary from the host institution and the School is unable to meet visitor’s expenses.

Visiting academics and research students are expected to engage in the life of the school in a voluntary capacity as agreed with the Head of School, and in consultation with the nominating academic.

Visitors in the School of Political Science and International Studies are entitled to the following benefits:

  • A University identity card to access the library and School rooms
  • Library access
  • Office space (shared)
  • Computer access
  • Access to School research activities, such as workshops, seminars and social events
  • IT login and an email account
  • Access to relevant School and University resources, such as room bookings, meeting rooms, basic IT support, and stationary.

Activities

Visitors are invited to engage in the intellectual life of the School during their visit. Depending on the nature and extent of their visit, this may include the following activities:

Visiting academics

  • Working on a research project with School of Political Science and International Studies collaborators
  • Delivering a research seminar, workshop or masterclasses.
  • Delivering a guest lecture
  • Delivering training for academics and/or HDR students (in a particular research method)
  • Engagement in HDR Progress Reviews
  • Providing expert advice, where relevant
  • Meeting with PhD candidates or early career academics
  • Active participation in school events and activities

Visiting research students

  • Meeting with relevant staff who are willing to support you during your visit
  • Undertaking fieldwork or relevant training
  • Participating in School events and activities (attend seminars, guest lectures, workshops)
  • Meeting with other HDR students

Application process

Visiting academics and research students must be nominated for the title by a relevant academic staff member who acts as designated host (or advisor in the case of research students) during their stay.

The application process for the title of visitor is as follows:

  1. The visitor contacts a current academic staff member who is willing to nominate the applicant and act as an academic host/advisor. The host will be required to complete a form indicating their support for the visit.
     
  2. Complete the visiting academic application form and provide accompanying documentation: 
  • Copy of CV
  • Letter/email of support from home institution

  1. The academic host completes the endorsement of the application using the visiting academic and research student form B.
     
  2. The academic host submits the application and accompanying documentation to the Head, School of Political Science and International Studies by emailing POLSIS Executive Assistant polsis.ea@uq.edu.au

The application must be submitted at least three months before the proposed visit. All international  visitors to Australia must have a valid visa and comply with government health and character requirements. This is to be organised at their own expense.

Applications will be assessed by the Director of Research, in consultation with the Head of School, based on alignment of the applicant and proposed activities with the mission of the School as outlined in the application form. Applicants will be notified of the outcome within a month.
