Garry Rodan is  Emeritus Professor (Politics & International Studies) in the College of Arts, Business, Law and Social Sciences at Murdoch University and an Honorary Professor at the School of Political Science and International Studies. He is also a Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences in Australia (FASSA). He was Director of the Asia Research Centre at Murdoch University during 2002-2009 and 2016-April 2019, and a Professorial Fellow of the Australian Research Council in the 2010-2015 period.

His thematic research interest is in the relationship between capitalist development, social change and and political regime directions in Southeast Asia. Attempting to characterise and explain dynamic and durable forms of authoritarian rule has been a particular focus, especially in Singapore.
