Presenter: Rune Saugman (Tampere)

Dr Rune Saugmann is an Academy of Finland post-doctoral researcher at University of Tampere. His work cuts across international relations and new media studies to explore the visual mediation of security. What are the visual avenues for production of military or security knowledge? How can we critically examine them? In today’s ‘sensor society’ an overwhelming amount of images are available to security bureaucracies but we lack methods to turn these into knowledge. In response to this issue I explore machine vision technologies and contrast them to technological and artistic projects that identify their blind spots.
