Promotion Success!

9 Jan 2020

The School of Political Science and International Studies is pleased to announce that two of our wonderful staff members have been promoted in this year’s round at UQ. We extend our congratulations to Emma Hutchison and Ryan Walter who have been promoted to Associate Professor, Level D. This is a clear and significant recognition of their enormous contributions to the School, the University, and their disciplines.

Associate Professor Emma Hutchison is an Australian Research Council (ARC) Discovery Early Career Researcher Award (DECRA) Fellow. Emma gave the Paul Bourke Lecture in 2019, described by Professor Christian Reus-Smit as ‘a fantastic lecture: a model for how to present the corpus of one’s work in a beautifully crafted, well-modulated, and accessible way. A class act by one of the best IR scholars of her generation.’ Watch the lecture.

Emma’s book Affective Communities in World Politics: Collective Emotions After Trauma (Cambridge UP, 2016) won both the BISA Susan Strange Book Prize and the ISA Theory Section Best Book Prize.

Associate Professor Ryan Walter is a former Australian Research Council (ARC) Discovery Early Career Researcher Award (DECRA) Fellow who, most recently, has been centrally involved in the establishment and delivery of the UQ Bachelor of Politics, Philosophy and Economics (Honours) program. Ryan's research appears in renowned journals and his international standing means he is regularly invited to present his work globally. Ryan is also an outstanding teacher and has also made an important contribution to the reinvigoration of the School'sHonours program since 2018.  He is currently completing his manuscript that examines the history of economics. Additional information on Ryan’s other important publications and record of research achievements can be found here.
