Head of School Welcome
The School of Political Science and International Studies has in recent weeks welcomed two new staff members. Dr Glenn Kefford is a specialist in political party campaigning, and is the current recipient of the Discovery Early Career Researcher Award from the Australian Research Council. Dr Katie Brennan is a post-doctoral fellow in the School. Both her doctoral and postdoctoral work focus on digital nonhuman actors like memes, hashtags and algorithms. Her research focusses on the intersection of political theory, popular culture and international relations.
The University of Queensland has performed extremely well in recent university rankings, cementing its position in the top 50 universities globally and improving its rankings in key areas.

Promotion success
Congratulations to staff who have been successful in the recent promotions round.
Dr Nicole George and Dr Morgan Brigg have been promoted to Associate Professor (Level D) and to Dr Alastair Stark and Dr Frank Mols have been promoted to Senior Lecturer (Level C).
These appointments will commence on 1 Jan 2019. |

ARC success
The School congratulates Professor Kath Gelber, Associate Professor Matt McDonald, and Dr Sarah Teitt on excellent results in the November 2018 ARC Grant Announcements! It is a testimony to the quality of our applicants and the merits of their projects.
Dr Sarah Teitt achieved a Discovery Early Career Researcher Award for her project 'China and the future of international peacebuilding. A/Prof Matt McDonald achieved a Discovery Project for his project 'Climate change and national security: international responses'. Prof Kath Gelber achieved a Discovery Project for her project 'Assessing the harms of online speech'.

Colleagues recognised by the Academy of the Social Sciences in Australia
Dr Emma Hutchison has been awarded the prestigious Paul Bourke Award from the Academy of the Social Sciences in Australia. Dr Hutchison is one of the outstanding Australian international relations scholars of her generation, internationally renowned for her research on emotions in world politics. Read more
Professor Gillian Whitehouse is one of thirty-six Australian social scientists who have been elected to the Academy of the Social Sciences in Australia for their distinguished contributions to their discipline and society. Read more

Brian Head and colleagues commended at UQ Research Excellence Awards
Congratulations to Professor Brian Head who was part of team of water management specialists working with interstate colleagues to improve sustainable water systems.
The team received a commendation for the Partners in Research Excellence Award at the UQ Research Excellence Awards ceremony in September at Customs House.

International Day of Peace 2018
The UQ Rotary Peace Centre and Class XVI Peace Fellows participated in the International Day of Peace celebrations at St John’s Cathedral on 21 September, recognising two local organisations as ‘Local Agents of Peace’. The Romero Centre and the Women’s League for International Peace and Freedom (WLIPF) were recognised on the night for their sustained contribution over the years towards peace in the community.

The School commemorates the life and contribution of Professor Ralph Summy
It is with deep sadness the School commemorates the life and contribution of our dear friend and colleague Professor Ralph Summy, who has passed away after a long illness.
Ralph was a founding Professor of Peace and Conflict here at the School and was warmly recognised as an 'Agent of Peace' at the 2017 International Day of Peace.

Implications of climate change for Australia's national security
A/Prof Matt McDonald’s research on the relationship between climate change and security has been quoted in an Australian Senate Committee Report on the Implications of Climate Change for Australia’s National Security released in 2018. The report, released in May, ultimately pointed to the potentially significant implications climate change could have for Australia’s national security, not least in the context of the vulnerability of Australia’s immediate region to rising sea levels and natural disasters.

PhD Student Lorraine Cherney awarded best student paper at the 28th Annual National Association of Gambling Studies Conference
PhD student Lorraine Cherney was awarded best student paper at the 28th Annual National Association of Gambling Studies Conference held in Brisbane last week. Her paper “Exploring 'Regulatory Relationships' in the Queensland Electronic Gaming Machine (EGM) Context" drew on her research which examines changes in the regulation of pokies since their introduction to Queensland in 1992.

Taking the 'hacktivist approach to technology'
The School’s first Massive Open Online Course (MOOC), ‘MediaWarX: Global Media, War and Technology’ encourages people to learn about the dark underbelly of the technology and media apps they use every day. Running regularly since mid-2017 and taken by over 7,400 learners from over 154 different countries, this free, flexible online course is being offered again from early January 2019. Read more

Thanks to Dialogue Team
The School thanks Federica Caso, Sarah Warner, Shannon Zimmerman, Paul Crawford and Dr Prudence Brown for their fantastic efforts reviving the Dialogue Journal. A new team of enthusiastic PhD students will take over the reigns in 2019, so stay tuned.
The PhD Dialogue Journal aims to bridge early and established research and build new epistemic communities. Read more
